I’m reporting my latest adventure in Tempe, Arizona.

I visited Tempe Yarn and Fiber Store.  

There in the mist of the summer heat and sandy landscape is the most awesome yarn shop imaginable. Loaded, and I really mean loaded with some of the nicest yarns around.  They have our favorite band names along with some locally handspun and colored yarns, and handmade buttons too. 

If you like to spin, this place will have you dreaming in color with their huge selection of roving.

As you can imagine, I couldn’t leave empty handed. Here’s what I got.

And trust me…I would have bought more but I was traveling light. LOL

And let me mention, that the Tempe people are very nice. And those in the yarn shop were no exception. I felt very welcomed.  I do hope to visit again. But if I can’t, its good to know that I can still get my hands on some of their yummy yarns. I can order and they’ll ship to me.  Yey.

Shoes just for us!

The lady at the yarn store says they are super comfortable.

I’m keeping my eye out for when it goes on sale. This design is new so I figure they’ll be pricey for a while. But at some point they’ll go on sale, and I’ll be ready to snatch them then. 

It’s a ¾ sleeve, no button, cardigan with a bit of seaside inspired design. Knitted with DK weight yarn. Fashionable yet sure to be a classic piece that will not go out of style. It’s not a heavy cardigan. The yarn choice will determine its warmth.

It’s almost ready to go!

It has already been tech edited and is currently being test knitted. It should be ready for release in late August.  I can’t wait to show it to you. I know you’ll like it.

For me, good airplane travel knits shouldn’t take up too much space. I don’t want to haul a large sweater or lots of yarn. A few balls of yarn is all I want to bring with me.  So after giving it a generous amount of thinking and pattern search I decided on a knit dishcloth/potholder.

Dishcloths and potholder are great travel knitting fun. By the end of my trip I’ll have something useful. Now I’m going to pick it up a notch and do some double knitting. Why? Well, since I’m knitting both sides, it will take me twice as long to finish.  Perfect for my long trip.

This is what will kept me happy.

If you’ve never tried double knitting, this would be a great project to use to learn the technique. Double Knitting Video. By the way, there are dozens of videos in Youtube on this technique.

Trip Tip:

• 1.  Needles are allowed (USA): According to the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) knitting needles are allowed. Their website reads…

“Knitting needles are permitted in your carry-on baggage or checked baggage.

Items needed to pursue a Needlepoint project are permitted in your carry-on baggage or checked baggage with the exception of circular thread cutters or any cutter with a blade contained inside which cannot go through the checkpoint and must go in your checked baggage.”

If you’re traveling outside the US, security restrictions may differ.

• 2.  My rule of thumb is to take a project that I could make with no more than 2 balls.
• 3.  Washcloths, dishcloths, potholder, etc. are great travel knits that can be worked flat.
• 4.  Scarves are a good choice too.
• 5.  If you like working with double pointed needles (DPN’s) socks, mittens, fingerless gloves, etc. are great too.
• 6. Take waste yarn: The TSA reserves the right to take anything they feel may be a security risk. We just never know for sure if they’ll take our needles. Take precaution and always have waist yarn to capture your stitches should you have to give up your needles.
• 7.   Don’t take your expensive needles, just in case. Also, wood or plasitc is always less threatening than metal.
• 8.  Nail clippers are acceptable. I always travel with them. They serve as little scissors for cutting yarn.
• I stay away from projects that are too special. The thought of loosing my work is just not worth it. I leave my nice lace pieces or other delicate work at home.

One of my pattern testers used this technique in blocking her shawl. I found it very interesting and worth passing on to you. With her permission I am sharing her photos as well.

Shawl blocking - Photo complements of Marjos in Ravelry

The shawl is folded at the center. Only 2 blocking wires are used, one for the center fold and the other for the top edge.  The points from both sides are pulled down together and pinned. 

Marjos comments that this way of blocking is much quicker since it requires less pinning. However, the only thing that bothers her is that the center fold is noticeable.

 This beanie is very special. This was a request from my son to make him this hat. He was very specific as to how it would look, how wide the stripes would be, what color to choose, and he wanted no ribbing.

I designed it in 3 sizes. Fits size: 22 (23, 24)” (56 58.5, 61 cm), head circumference with approx. 2” negative ease

It’s time to take them out so you can see them.

Take them out of their safe place and use them. Personally, I like to have them out so that I can see them. If I don’t see them, I forget to wear them.

Here are some ideas – Displaying your shawls.

• Throw them over the back of any chair that you may have in your bedroom.
• Throw one over the bed much like you would place a decorative throw over your bed. Just put it aside at bedtime.
• Place over sofa back, assuming its a safe place from little ones or pets.
• If you have a canopy bed, get creative. There’s lots of ways to display them over your bed.
• If you have low valance window, you can spread one over the top balance. That’s assuming its low enough that you can reach for it.  Make sure you keep the shawl out of direct sunlight.
• Display them over furniture such as consoles, dining table, pianos, etc.

Wear them. 

Ultimately, it’s about wearing those wonderful shawls we invested so much time into making. It’s time to enjoy them.
